10 Tips to Make Your Long Distance Move Easier
Moving to a different city or another state can be far more stressful than moving across town because of the long distances involved and the extended amount of time that it takes. Make this process easier by following these ten tips.
1. Inspect Outdoor Furniture
Make sure your outdoor furniture is free of insects or larva. Such infestations are prohibited by moving regulations designed to prevent hazards from crossing state lines.
2. Organize When You Pack
Divide your possessions by room so they can be stored properly on arrival and unloaded more quickly. Create a Day One box that contains items you need as soon as you arrive at your new home. It can include clothes, kitchenware, medical devices, and other essential items.
3. Pack up Your Possessions for Long Distance Travel
Your boxes may be handled by different teams of movers as they move long distances in a truck. Keep the contents well protected by ensuring that each box is packed tightly with no loose items. Seal all containers, keeping in mind that boxes may be turned upside down.
4. Put Your Mattress in a Box
Avoid damage to your relatively delicate mattress by packing it inside a box. If you don’t do this, you risk tearing its fabric, bending its structure, or dirtying it surfaces.
5. Label Each Box Correctly
At a minimum, each box should have your name spelled out so that it isn’t confused with other people’s boxes that are being transported in the same truck. To ease unloading, mark each container with the room it’s going to and the contents.
6. Avoid Packing Food or Liquids
Liquids can spill, damaging the other items in the truck. Food is exposed to extremes of temperature, making it spoil faster. It can also attract pests such as cockroaches and mice to your shipment. Avoid packing these perishables.
7. Get Adequate Insurance
Federal regulations require moving companies to compensate you only 60 cents per pound if your items are damaged. That coverage may not be enough especially if you’re moving art, expensive furniture or other valuable items. Determine the cost of the items in your shipment so you can decide whether to buy extra insurance.
8. Bring the Items You Need on Arrival with You
Keep personal documents such as your driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card, and birth certificate with you at all times. Do not pack anything that you need at your destination before your shipment arrives including hygiene products, job materials, and additional clothes.
9. Know Your Move-In Situation
Know what parking is available for the truck, whether a permit is needed and whether you’ll need a shuttle, at an additional cost, to move boxes from a large tractor-trailer through the smaller roads to your home.
10. Determine the Move-In Requirements for Your Destination Building
Find out what your destination building’s moving regulations are so your movers aren’t waiting around because something is amiss. These rules can include specific hours for the move and whether you need to reserve elevators or block off corridors.
