Why You Should Move in the Fall

Although moving is an exciting experience, it can also be a stressful and overwhelming experience. Whether your move is planned or unexpected, there are several factors to consider during the moving process, including the weather. If you will be moving in the fall, the good news is that you have chosen a great time of the year to pack up for a fresh start. Here are just a few of the benefits that come with a fall move.

Fall Is The Best Time For Moving

One of the best benefits of moving in the fall is the weather! Throughout most of the United States, the weather from September through the first couple of weeks of November is cool, without a lot of rain and the snow hasn’t usually started falling yet. This means no hot, sweaty summer days or no hazardous driving in winter ice and snow. A fall move will be much easier on both you and your movers.

Safety

It's easier to move safely in the fall as opposed to the winter and summer months. For one, the weather conditions in the winter make it hazardous for movers. And in the summer, heat exhaustion and accidents are more common.

Flexible Costs and Scheduling

Although people move every day, the most common time to move is during the spring and summer, especially in June and July. In many situations, moving companies are caught up from the hectic summer season, so it will be easier to schedule a date to move; one that is closer to your needs than the moving company’s availability. The cost of moving is typically less expensive as well because there is greater availability of movers and the gas prices are generally less expensive during the fall.

Home for the Holidays

The holidays are the perfect time to invite family and friends over to celebrate, so you can start settling into your new home in October or early November. The holidays are the perfect time to meet your new neighbors and get to know your new home.

Fall Moving Tips

Although this is a great time of the year to move, there are always things that can go overlooked when moving. Here are a few tips to help make your move smoother:

  • Make sure utilities are turned on in the new place. Sometimes transferring accounts can take a few days, so it’s best to contact the utility companies at least one week in advance prior to your move.
  • Clear all pathways, indoors and outdoors. Making sure there aren’t any toys, piles of leaves or outdoor furniture in the path of the movers will reduce the risk of injuries and make the move quicker and smoother.
  • Keep a broom nearby. You will need a broom to sweep out the moving truck as well as last-minute cleanups at the old place.
  • Dress comfortably. Fall weather can change from hour to hour, so be sure to keep a light jacket with you in case it turns chilly and be sure to wear comfortable, non-restrictive shoes, pants and shirt.

Remember to contact the moving company a few days before the day of your scheduled move to confirm your appointment and to verify the time the movers will be arriving. Be sure to have everything packed and ready to go before the movers arrive unless you have hired the moving company to do the packing as well; in this situation, try to be as clear as possible when providing instructions about what goes and what doesn’t. Also, if you have pets, keep in mind that people will be in and out all day, so be sure to place them in a bedroom or other area out of the way and to keep them safe.
