If you are moving to a smaller apartment, into a “tiny” home, or simply want to downsize before your move to keep things more minimal, consider the following tips.
#1: Know Your Priorities
The first and one of the most important things to do to make the downsizing process a realization is to make a list of your must-have items. Go room to room and think about what you must have from each room to live comfortably.
Start in the kitchen and do a complete inventory of all cooking items, eating utensils and accessories you have and consider what you realistically need for survival, for example, how many pots, skillets and plates do you need? Limit these items to one place setting per person.
#2: Keep, Toss and Donate
If you have figured out that you will be moving to a smaller home, immediately begin the process of getting rid of stuff you do not need. Going room by room, have four boxes: one for items to keep, one for toss items, a box for items to sell and one for items you’ll donate. As you are sorting through items, do not give yourself time to think about the items.
For example, if you have two coffee pots and are holding onto the extra “just in case,” put it in the donate box without hesitation. #3: Getting Rid of Stuff

Everything that you cannot give away to friends and family, sell it! Selling your items will not only reduce your clutter, but it will give you a chance to make some extra money in the process.
Plan to have a garage sale about two weeks before moving day. An important tip to keep in mind is that if you cannot get your asking price, consider taking the best offer; it will get rid of the item and you won’t have to be concerned about dragging a lot of left-over items to the local thrift shop.
#4: Get Creative with Storage
One of the most important things to keep in mind is that a smaller home will not have the amount of storage that you have in a larger home. For this reason it essential that you plan ahead and think outside of the box. Utilize space for storage that you typically wouldn’t consider using.
For example, building bookshelves that extend from floor to ceiling is a great way to use a top shelve for storing casserole dishes that are only used on holidays, store seasonal clothing in plastic containers under the bed or invest in an ottoman that doubles as a storage bin for books and DVDs.
