Moving into a new home is an exciting experience, but the moving process itself is not only stressful but expensive. After paying the down payment, utility transfer fees and closing costs, if you’re like most people, it can put a strain on your wallet. The good news is, there are several things you can do to that will help you save money on your moving costs. Here are four tips to help you get started on making a move more affordable:
Purge Before Packing
Moving services charge by the distance covered and the pound, so don't pack and move anything you do not need. Start packing as soon as possible before moving day. This will allow you to take your time, sort through what you need and don’t need and pack fewer boxes, which will save on the cost of moving. Going room-to-room, clear all of the closets, drawers and knick-knack shelves and only keep what you love and can’t throw out. As you go into each room, make sure you have a box for keep items, a box for donation items and a garbage bag for trash. As the boxes fill, label the keep boxes accordingly, take the donation boxes to your car for drop-off and take the trash out to the bin. Not only do fewer boxes mean lighter shipping costs, but it’s less you’ll have to unpack in the new house.
The more “compact” your belongings are packed, the less there will be for the movers to load and unload and it will help to reduce the weight. For example:
- Place clothes that are on hangers in large garbage bags. Simply cut a hole in the bottom of the bag and slip the bag over the hangers. Remember to label the bag so the movers will know which room they belong to.
- To avoid shattering dinnerware, pack plates vertically instead of stacking them.
- When packing televisions for the move, put all cords, remotes and cable boxes in a large plastic baggie and tape it to the back of the tv and don't forget to label it.
Have a Garage Sale
Having a garage sale is not only the perfect way to reduce the amount of stuff you move, but you can also make money. It is important to plan the garage sale several weeks in advance. On the last day of the garage sale, pack up all items that did not sell and take them directly to a donation center.
Instead of buying boxes, start collecting them from family, friends and local businesses a few weeks before your move. When wrapping fragile items, use linens, towels, and clothing to wrap them instead of bubble wrap. When looking for boxes, check local supermarkets and liquor stores; both usually have many on hand and in various sizes.
If you are moving for your job, try to talk to your employer about a relocation package and don’t forget to deduct your moving expenses from your taxes. Keep all of your receipts; especially if your move is due to work. Also, remember to make an itemized list of the items you donated before the move so you can use the donations as a tax deduction.
